We all know how it is, especially those of us who live in Texas. Summer time roles around and with it comes that horrible heat. We try to spend the least amount of time outside in the hottest hours and keep our cars and buildings comfortably cool. But unlike us, sadly, not all rabbits are able to be kept indoors, whether it be because of an allergy, other animals, or not enough space. Our beloved pets must stay outside - this poses a big problem when summer arrives. This is the first post in my series, "Summer Stop" where I'll be addressing some summer problems and solutions for your bunny. This post is all about Heatstroke - what it is, and how to recognize it at work in your pet. HeatstrokeWhat is it? Basically, Heatstroke is the result of your body over-heating. It can be fatal, especially if left uncared for. Causes: Direct exposure to the sun for a long amount of time. (aka no shade) Little to no air flow. Temperatures above 80 degrees. Thick coat. Lack of water. Excessive exercise in the heat. Stuck in cage with lots of bedding etc. Not used to being outside in the heat. (For example, suddenly putting an indoor rabbit outside in the hot of the day and leaving it there - the rabbit needs to be acclimated gradually if it is to stay there) The Signs Salivating (aka, drooling. Basically the area around your rabbit's nose and mouth will be wet) Overly fast or/and shallow breathing Tossing head back while panting with mouth open Acting frantic or confused. Lethargy (slow movement or weakness) Heatstroke can cause the blood vessels in your rabbit's ears to get larger, their ear color can look more flushed and feel hot to the touch. Heat can be a real fatality to rabbits, that is why it is vital to understand the risk of heatstroke and to keep an eye on your bunny if they are outside or in a hot house. Next week for the second post in my series: "Summer Stop" I'll be talking about Heatstroke prevention (aka keeping your rabbit cool) and what to do if your rabbit is showing signs of Heatstroke -- so subscribe so you won't miss out (plus you'll get exclusive updates on the rabbitry)! Have a happy-hopping day! I am not a vet, so of course all this is just information I have gathered and learned.
